A (Cover) Design For Life?

These two book covers aren’t quite twins (more like half-siblings), though they have both been published recently.

More alarming, though, is the sentence which is created by reading their titles in sequence.

Oh Come On, You’re Not Even Trying Now

Sure, I don’t expect all book designers to be as innovative as Chip Kidd, but if you’re going to design a book jacket with a startling resemblance to another title, do at least try to make sure it’s not a bestseller, eh ?

I Can’t Quite Justify Putting This In The ‘Unintelligent Design’ Series Of Posts…

… but it’s certainly unimaginative design – especially as the train station advert for the Battles book directly refers to the main character in Lee Child’s books.

Granted, you want to be sure that your marketing aims directly at its targets, but in the same way that Digimon was so obviously an attempt to copy the success of Pokemon, this is pretty blatant, isn’t it?

Like Jeepers Creepers, Except The Monster’s Only Small

It seems the monster’s been waiting and planning since 1990… but now it is ready to emerge and feast!

A-hahahahahaaaaaah.

I do apologise. I think perhaps I need to go and have a lie down.

Meanwhile, In An Office In Soho, London…

AdMan1: Damn it, Jed, I’ve got nothing.

AdMan2: Nothing at all, Ty? That’s not like you.

AdMan1: I know, I’m the most prolific young buck at this damn agency, but I just can’t come up with anything to sell these fizzy mineral tablet things.

AdMan2: Tough break, Ty. Anyway, look at this funny video on YouTube, it’ll help take your mind off it.

They watch the video.

AdMan1: Hey, I like that. Who’s playing?

AdMan2: They’re called ‘OK Go!’.

AdMan1: Never heard of them. Anyway, how many views has that video had?

AdMan2 peers at the screen for a second.

AdMan2: About 30 million, Ty.

AdMan1: Is that all? Well, I’m sure no-one’ll notice if we rip it off.

AdMan2 frowns.

AdMan2: Rip it off?

AdMan1: Er, I mean, make an homage to it.

AdMan2: I was worried for a moment there, Ty. You sounded perilously close to being a non-creative.

AdMan1: Not me, Jed, I’m a creative genius, and I could build brands in my sleep.

AdMan2: Amen to that, Ty.

Cut to:

Three months later, same office. This advert plays on a TV screen. In front of it, Jed and Ty high-five.

Just A Stone’s Bow Away From Identical, If You Ask Me

No wonder the recently-striking members of the Writers’ Guild of America feel they generally got a good deal and ended the strike.

Jon Bowman, a member of the WGA negotiating committee, bears a striking resemblance to Oliver Stone, a writer and director who’s not exactly known for holding back when it somes to voicing his opinion.

I wouldn’t argue with either of them, they both look like they mean business…

P.P.S. – We Changed The Narrative Through-Line When You Weren’t Looking

I know that they usually change the plot a lot when they make a book into a film, and I know that Hilary Swank has played a woman masquerading as a man before (just as Cate Blachett recently played Bob Dylan), but… well, really.

Twins, Twice

I fully expect the first link to go dodgy within 10 days or so, but I couldn’t resist putting this in…

(Yes, I know, great minds and all that, but it’s good to have the question I posed in my post answered; clearly, it isn’t just me.)

A Night At The Bingo

Alan Carr and Bingo from the Banana Splits – separated at birth?

Not that I’m having a go at Alan – in fact, I was pleased to see that his current stand-up DVD is selling very well – I saw the event live (tip of the hat to m’laydee for suggesting we go in spite of uncertainty on my part), and was very impressed indeed; ignore his appearances on the execrable ‘Friday Night Project’, where he’s utterly wasted, and check out the DVD, where you can see what I consider a truly ‘classic’ stand-up set – lots of well-honed jokes and stories, which are all tight and to the point.

Genunely worth your time and money. Even if Alan does look like Bingo.

Covered, Yet Bareback

Contrary to what book cover designers would have me believe, I don’t actually spend all my time approaching semi-clad women from behind and to the left.
