Plagues and Plagiarism

Two things relating to Jane Austen (which is as surprising to me as it is to you; I don’t really care for her stuff):

Firstly, this amuses me – it might not be wholly damning (they might only have one form rejection letter, after all), but it was kind of amusing. Though slightly negative, as it allows rejectees to say ‘Ah, so this is why my genius goes unacknowledged’, and other would-be writers to think that submitted material goes unread. Though that might clear the field a bit, hmm…

And secondly, following on from the success of Life on Mars, ITV have announced a show called Lost in Austen, about a woman who finds herself in the works of Jane Austen. A fun idea, but I would say that, as I enjoyed the book The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, which features a woman who finds she’s able to … oh, however did you guess?

IdleWilde(r)

There must have been a point when Eric Idle started to look like Gene Wilder, but I can’t pinpoint it exactly…

Blam! Splat! Comics Aren’t Just For Kids!

1992 : Hard Boiled, by the comic art expert (and later designer of the Matrix films), Geof Darrow.

And then, here in 2007, the cover to the new comic by Kyle Baker. Thing is, Baker’s a terrifically talented comic writer / artist too.

Actually, I doubt it’s a swipe, but I wanted to point out the similarity anyway (chances are there’s a Frontline Combat cover from the old EC comics which predates this layout anyway).

To Catch A Thief

In the 1999 film Bowfinger, successful comedian Steve Martin wrote the screenplay in which he co-stars with equally successful comedian Eddie Murphy.

In the BBC TV series Hustle (first aired 2004), a group of con artists specialise in carrying out scams on the rich. This usually involves stealing jewels, antiques or cash, but the approach also appears to extend to promotional taglines.

Friday Night Blights

When I was growing up, my Friday Nights were blighted by the television programme ‘Out of Town’ hosted by Jack Hargreaves. The programme always seemed to last more than its actual 30 minutes, as he talked about horseshoes and crops and whatnot. I’m led to believe he may have been a director of the ITV franchise it was shown on, which might explain why the show seemed to be recommissioned indefinitely, but that might just be bitter TV insider gossip.
Also pictured here, the logo for a well-known chicken-based foodstuff emporium, recently redesigned, but I still think they look the same.
On the other hand, you might agree with Robin Williams that Colonel Sanders more closely resembles Ho Chi Minh.

Advertising is, of course, an art form in its own right

Is it just my imagination, or..?

Sacked X-Factor Judge Writes Novel…

… but cover designer decides to make it resemble another book on the shelves.

Moulded From The Same Press

… well, maybe kinda sorta.
